The first week, we will spend in and around Manchester. The above photo shows an aerial view of Manchester (taken by Daniel NIsbet). Manchester is located in the middle of England, not far from the western coast. Because of its central location, it is easy to catch a train to London or Scotland.
Our classes will be held at the University of Salford, which is about a mile and a half from the heart of Manchester. We will spend mornings (Monday-Thursday) in a classroom, but the afternoons out in Manchester seeing the area and taking photos. The university is much like JMU - student focused - and tries to provide students with experiential learning opportunities. JMU students will be staying in student apartments on campus and taking class in a building several blocks away. For more information on the University of Salford, see the university's website.

Manchester began as a Roman fort in 79 CE, so it has a rich Roman history, which we will explore while we are there. We will also visit other historical buildings, such as The Old Wellington Inn, built in 1552 and pictured to the right, as well as Manchester Town Hall, the Museum of Science and Industry, the Manchester Art Gallery, the Manchester Museum, BBC Manchester, and others.
More recently, Manchester has been known for its music scene and its football. Since 1993, Manchester has invested in the development of bars, nightclubs, and breweries so it now has a very active nightlife.
